FAQs on unwanted body hair

A head full of thick luscious shiny hair is a beautiful sight. But, with stressful lives we lead in today’s world,

the imbalances have literally led to reversal of sorts.

Receeding hair on scalp for both sexes and unwanted facial hair for women has become common leading to loss of confidence, reduced social life and psychological issues.

This can thankfully be addressed with modern technology. First, let’s analyse whether this hair growth is normal.

Thicker hair, except on scalp, arm pits and groin area, which grows frequently is a sign of hormonal imbalance. It’s also normal to have hair on the upper lip for young ladies who have peer pressure and parents are often forced to seek advice.

The self confidence levels of an impressionable teenager is an important critical thing and keeping that in mind removal of the hair if it bothers the child is a good way forward, says Dr Tina Ramachander, consulting dermatologist.

“Laser hair removal is not done on patients until they attain the age of 18 and hence it is best to defer it until the right age. Laser hair removal makes such hair manageable and it’s more of a reduction than a removal. It’s an easily done office procedure and depending on the area involved, it can take between five minutes to an hour,” says Dr Tina.

It’s important to get one hormonally evaluated before starting the procedure. There are other dont’s too: Patients should limit their exposure to the sun both pre and post treatment.

Also, some creams can sensitise skin and those with such a condition have to plan the procedure with a practitioner.

The painless modes which move faster on the body can be opted for. While laser procedures are usually tolerated well, but as every person has a different pain threshold, one can opt for local cream-based anaesthesia to avoid any discomfort or pain.

The operator should have a good skill and understanding of the technology. Nowadays, the number of clinics offering laser for hair removal are many.

The right choice should be a qualified doctor with good experience with the technology, word-of-mouth from a person who has undergone the procedure and the ability of the practitioner to hand-hold the patient through the sessions.

Laser hair removal is a relatively easy procedure done with gratifying results. People often go back with confidence and a glow on their faces  with less number of scars. It’s important to get the right guidance and knowledge and decide on it, adds Dr Tina.
